When is a tooth too damaged to be saved?

Dentists and oral surgeons will always try to save your natural tooth, but in some cases this may not be possible.

When this is the situation, extraction can be the option that leads to the best results.

In this post, we’ll run through some common scenarios where a tooth is too damaged to be saved.

Tooth is avulsed or broken too close to the base

Teeth that are knocked out or broken due to a sports injury, vehicle accident, or other facial trauma, can sometimes be placed back into the gums, or repaired. But when the tooth dies, or too much time has passed before seeking treatment, the damaged tooth may need to be removed.

Infection

When a tooth infection spreads to the pulp of your tooth, which is the inner part where the nerves and blood supply are, antibiotics and a root canal may be required to remove and cure the infection and allow the tooth to heal. However, in severe cases where the infection is too deep, extraction may be the only option.

Insufficient space in the jawbone

In the case of impacted wisdom teeth, or other teeth stuck below the surface of the gumline, an x-ray of your jawbone will determine whether your mouth is large enough to accept new teeth. As impacted teeth can damage adjacent teeth, removal may be required to prevent oral health issues from developing.

Decay has weakened the tooth’s structure

Severe tooth decay that extends beyond the surface areas of a tooth can impact structural stability and leave too little healthy tissue to save the tooth. When a tooth is too weak to be useful for chewing, even after treatment, extraction and tooth replacement may be required.

Dental implants for tooth replacement

With modern implant technology, losing a tooth doesn’t have to change your smile. Oral surgeons can now install new teeth that look, feel and function just like your natural teeth. Ask about dental implants if you need to have a tooth extracted. The best time to place implants is shortly after a tooth has been removed.
