Teeth Replacement Options: All-on-4 Dental Implants vs. Traditional Implants

Have you lost all—or nearly all—your teeth to age, advanced periodontal disease, decay, or injury? Are your removable dentures failing and causing too many problems? Have you been told you are not a candidate for dental implant surgery to replace missing teeth due to bone loss in your jaw? The good news is that modern dentistry offers solutions that can restore not only your smile but also your confidence and quality of life.

New teeth replacement options for patients seeking a different kind of dental implant include the All-On-4® method. This innovative dental implant procedure provides a permanent, stable, natural-looking upper and/or lower set of prosthetic teeth in just one day.

What Are All-on-4 Implants?

As the name implies, the All-On-4 dental implant is a permanent bridge that carries a full set of prosthetic teeth on four implants. These titanium implants are engineered so your oral surgeon can place them into the jaw at an angle, unlike traditional implants. This allows patients with virtually no bone to securely support a full upper and/or lower set of teeth without bone grafting. The four implants carry 12 to 14 teeth and are placed immediately after implant surgery.

This permanent teeth replacement option is completed in a single visit to our office which is why the procedure is also called ‘same day teeth’.

What Are Traditional Dental Implants?

Traditional dental implants consist of titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The posts are attached to an implant and provide stable anchors for the replacement teeth. While All-On-4® implants are ideal for replacing a full arch of teeth, traditional dental implants are the preferred solution for replacing one missing tooth at a time.

How All-on-4 Works for Full Mouth Teeth Replacement

When you come to Bergen Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery for your procedure, you will be fitted with four dental implants in your upper or lower jawbone. The implants are used to support your new full arch of teeth.  Then, a set of temporary teeth is attached to the implants allowing you to leave our office with your new smile. Over the next few months, the implants will fuse with your bone in a process called osseointegration. Once the implants are fused with your bone you are ready for your permanent, natural-looking teeth to be placed.

How Traditional Dental Implants Work

During your first visit for your dental implant procedure, a titanium implant will be surgically placed into the jawbone where the missing tooth was. The implant also needs time for osseointegration, similar to the All-On-4® titanium posts.  Once the implant is fused with the jaw bone, you’ll come back to our office where we will attach an abutment to the implant and finally, your custom-made crown.

Benefits of All-on-4 Vs Traditional Dental Implants

All-On-4® offers significant advantages over traditional dental implants, which often require multiple surgeries and extended recovery times. These ‘denture implants’ don’t slip or slide out of place, meaning you won’t get stuck with food underneath them. They are permanent and durable, allowing you to eat your favorite foods with confidence. You can clean your All-on-4® implants like your natural teeth, with daily brushing and oral care. Best of all, your All-on-4® implants are custom fitted specifically for you, giving you a perfect fit and a natural looking smile in only one surgery. In just one day, the team of oral surgeons at Bergen Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in NJ can restore your smile and your confidence.

Advantages of Traditional Implants to Replace Missing Teeth

Traditional implants offer the benefit of replacing your missing teeth on a one-to-one basis, which can be ideal for patients who only need to replace a few missing teeth as opposed to a full arch of teeth. Because dental implants are anchored to the jaw, they are incredibly durable. You’ll feel confident biting into apples, corn on the cob, or enjoying a delicious steak once again. You’ll be able to eat, smile, laugh and talk with confidence when we replace your missing teeth for you.

Key Differences Between All-on-4 and Traditional Implants

While All-On-4® implants and traditional dental implants are ideal for replacing missing teeth, several differentiating factors exist between them.

The All-On-4® full teeth replacement technique is a faster procedure. Patients leave our NJ office with their full set of prosthetic teeth on the same day.  Although patients return for their permanent teeth, All-on-4 only requires just one surgery.

For dental implants, you may need multiple surgeries depending on how many replacement teeth you need. There is also the possibility of bone grafting for dental implants to ensure the implant can attach to the jawbone.  Because All-On-4® uses an advanced implant placement technique, we are able to place the implant in areas of the jawbone that are naturally stronger and denser.

Which Teeth Replacement Option is Right for You?

Deciding between All-On-4® dental implants and traditional dental implants as teeth replacement options depends on your individual needs. All-On-4® is designed for a full smile restoration where an entire arch of teeth, upper or lower, needs to be replaced. Dental implants are better suited in instances where a patient only has one or a few missing teeth. All-On-4® also typically avoids the need for bone grafting, making it a more straightforward option for patients with bone loss. Both All-On-4® and traditional implants provide long-lasting, natural-looking results.
