Is Oral Surgery Minimally Invasive?

Dr-Diaz-NJ-Oral-Surgeon-Examines-Patient

Your dentist may have recently told you you need a tooth extracted, a dental implant, or another oral surgery procedure. You may be concerned and wondering, ‘Is oral surgery minimally invasive?’ Over the years advancements in technologies and techniques have meant that many procedures that once were considered invasive and required lengthy recovery times are now minimally invasive.

Minimally invasive oral surgeries offer patients more precise and efficient treatments with less pain and shorter downtimes. Bergen County Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery patients are now benefiting from minimally invasive oral surgery techniques for common procedures including tooth extractions, dental implants, and bone grafting.

What Are the Risks Associated with Minimally Invasive Oral Surgery?

Like any surgery, complications are possible. Even with minimally invasive oral surgery techniques, problems such as infections or failure of implants to integrate (osseointegration of dental implants) could arise.

Choosing an experienced oral surgeon can help minimize risks. As the only Bergen County, NJ oral surgery provider with dual-degree surgeons on staff, Bergen Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery’s surgical team trained for years in dentistry and medicine, receiving credentials in both.

Our team of oral surgeons will conduct a thorough consultation with you to discuss your procedure and any pre or post-operative care you may need. This may include antibiotics before your dental procedure and follow-up visits to ensure a smooth recovery. We are here to answer any questions and guide you through the process. We’ll continue to be available after your procedure, responding to any follow-up questions and ensuring your comfort and wellness through recovery and beyond.

Preparing for Your Surgery – Eating, Drinking, and Medications

Before your scheduled surgery appointment at Bergen Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, our team will provide you with pre and post-operative surgery instructions. Preparation for your procedure will depend on whether you will be having local anesthesia, sedation, or nitrous oxide.

For local anesthesia, there are no restrictions on eating or drinking before surgery. If you are having nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, you may eat prior to surgery but we ask that it be a light meal. For IV anesthesia, you will be instructed to avoid eating or drinking anything 6 hours prior to your surgery.

Your doctor will review further pre-operative instructions with you including taking your medications before oral surgery, arriving for surgery, and whether or not you will be able to drive yourself home.
