A simple implant care guide

Giving yourself the gift of a new smile is exciting. From improved self-confidence to enjoying your favorite foods again, getting implants can improve your life. Set yourself up for a lifetime of bigger, brighter smiles by learning to care properly for your dental implants.

Start by following all postop instructions

It’s important to look after your implants during the initial healing phase, while you are waiting for osseointegration, which is the fusing of your implant to your jawbone. During this time, you will be instructed to refrain from using tobacco and alcohol and to take care with eating foods that could loosen your implant before it has a chance to be fixed in place with new bone tissue. Immediately after your surgery you will be asked to avoid straws or spitting and given directions for managing swelling and bleeding. Be sure to follow all instructions and take all prescribed medications.

Brush and floss

Day to day care of your dental implant is no different than your regular oral health routine for your natural teeth. If you’re already diligent with brushing and flossing, then you’re good to go. However, if you struggle to keep up with regular oral health, it’s important to improve in order to protect your new implant and your remaining natural teeth.

Schedule regular appointments

Visiting your dentist twice a year for checkups and cleaning can help extend the life of your dental implant.

When to call your dentist

Most patients will never experience serious issues with their dental implants but if the gum tissue around your implant becomes swollen, red or uncomfortable, call your dentist for advice. If you feel as though your implant is loose, schedule an appointment to have it looked at straight away.

Designed to last a lifetime

Dental implants are a permanent tooth replacement solution. When properly cared for, your implants can last for the rest of your life.
